Mario Botta describes his design for the new restaurant on the plateau of Monte Generoso as a “stone flower”. This is because, much like a flower, the building opens out towards the light. As the location is so exposed, the large vertical glazing needs to withstand extreme wind and snow loads. It was possible to design the load-bearing structure to be very slimline and with high thermal insulation using heavy duty steel profiles by Schüco Jansen steel systems.
